The Deck

Deck Change: Wrapping a towel around oneself to change (typically into or out of a bathing suit) in a public setting.
This is the place where you can talk about the pics, the sport, the weather, and the lack of pictures of deck changes on this site.

Janet Evans Invitational - 2006

Pat Cary, Bart Stenninger, Fiona O'Donnell-McCarthy, Lyndon Ferns and Hailey DeGolia

I have always wanted to go to Janet Evans and I finally got my chance. It was hot. I mean Africa Hot. The temperature was in the middle 90's at 5pm. What a beautiful pool USC has with the McDonald's Swim Stadium. The spectator seating is limited to one side only, but that was not a problem at this meet. There were a small handful of parents but very few casual spectators. That really surprised me expecially looking that the talent that was in the pool. Natalie Coughlin, Jason Lezak, Salim Iles, and Roland Schoeman to name a few.

For some reason the stand out swim for me was South African swimmer Lyndon Ferns (swimming for Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics) in the 100 Fly. Hey blew the field away and the energy coming off of him was palpable. His finish time of 52.59 was more than a second faster than his seed time of 53.75 and a second faster than the next finisher. I wrote his club to see if he was close to a PB. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe this was it. It was great to see a world calliber swimmer like Lyndon really bringing it to a meet like this.

The star of the meet was the incredible heat. I feel there might have been more spectators there if the heat weren't so bad. But if I can stand it anyone else can. The facilities there are beautiful. I will definately attend more meets there. I don't know if Janet Evans was there the first day and then just didn't present awards after that or if she was not there at all, but it would have been nice to have seen her at her namesake meet. The international teams competing were the French and Chinese. The sunsets were beautiful during the relays. I love the lighting duing the final events. Just wish I had gotten better pics at that time of day. I hope this meet continues and grows in popularity. I'd love to see more spectator support at this meet. So.. Same time next year, BE there!
